Lowest fatality figures in 2009
2009 recorded the lowest level of workplace deaths
Lowest fatality figures in 2009
43 people were killed in workplace accidents in 2009, which is the lowest figure on record since modern records covering all workplaces began. In 1991, 73 people were killed in workplace accidents, when 1,155,900 people were in employment. But in 2009, even with the downturn in the economy, the numbers in employment were 1,922,400 for the July - September quarter (the latest period for which CSO figures are available). Comparing the death rate per 100,000 workers, they stood at 6.31 in 1991, while by last year it had fallen to 2.23. There is no room for complacency, but the reduction in workplace fatalities is encouraging and great credit is due to the HSA, employers and employee representatives who continue to work collaboratively for greater workplace safety. The most dangerous sectors continue to be agriculture, in which 11 people were killed, and construction, in which 10 were killed. The next most dangerous sector was transport and storage, in which seven people were killed. Two people were killed in each of the following sectors: fishing, quarrying, public order, and education. One person was killed in each of the following sectors: forestry, manufacturing, retail, accommodation/food services, professional/technical activities, administration/support activities, healthcare, and other service activities.
